Machine Setter

Sets up and adjusts machines such as lathes, milling, machines, boring machines, drills and punch presses, grinders, etc. for other workers by performing the following duties.

Duties and Responsibilities

Roles & Responsibilities:  Include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Reads blueprints or job order for product specifications such as dimensions and tolerances, and tooling instructions such as feed rate, cutting speed, depth of cut, fixtures, and cutting tools to be used.

Installs and adjusts holding device and fastens specified cutting and shaping tools in position to enable operator to produce finished work piece to specifications.

Selects and sets speed and feed of machine according to type or operation and specified material and finish.

Starts machine to obtain first run work piece and verifies dimensional tolerance.  Must maintain OSC to inspect own pieces.

Changes worn cutting tools and adjusts operation of machine such as cutting speed, feed rate, or depth of cut, when required.

Instructs and certifies operators or other workers in machine setup and operation.

Generates work orders or tool requests as required.

Interfaces with engineering, quality control and other support groups to help resolve problems or issues which may arise.

Responsible for the quality of own work as well as the work performed by all other personnel in their assigned area.

Ensures safe operation of all equipment in assigned area.

Ensures safe work habits by all personnel performing work in assigned areas.

Performs other related duties as required.

Skills and Experience


High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or six plus months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
